Text:

There was a lady sitting at the right hand near the front who was " slight built and had a child with her about two years old." The child was described as being " quite forward, for his age, talking well, and was very bright and interesting."

Note: The story passed down through the years is that Mary died in a train accident. Her son, Charles, was also on the train, but he survived.

The story passed down through the years is that Mary died in a train accident. Her son, Charles, was also on the train, but he survived.

It is believed they were on the train that crashed when a bridge collapsed in Ashtabula, Ohio on December 29, 1876. Although there is no record of the Hiners being on that train, the date of that accident fits in with the marriage datesforLafayette Hiner. Those dates, coupled with the story told of Lafayette's 1st wife dying in a train accident, have led to the conclusion she most likely perished in that disaster.

The book, "Ashtabula Disaster," describes a woman and child on the train who very well could have been Mary and Charles Hiner.
