The child was described as being " quite forward, for his age, talking well, and was very bright and interesting." Note: The story passed down through the years is that Mary died in a train accident. Those dates, coupled with the story told of Lafayette's 1st wife dying in a train accident, have led to the conclusion she most likely perished in that disaster. The book, "Ashtabula Disaster," describes a woman and child on the train who very well could have been Mary and Charles Hiner.
