Note: The following articles appeared icovering the injury and death of Augusta Cemetery resident, The following articles appeared icovering the injury and death of Augusta Cemetery resident, AUGUST MAN SHOT (Excerpted from the CANTON NEWS) Elmer E. Pottorf, of Canton, started for Chicago Sunday to investigate the mystery of the shooting of Charles Pettit, his nephew and a son of Mrs. Jennie Pettit of this city. The word first came here that the wounded man's name was Clarence E.Pettit, but as no one by that name was known here, Mr. Pottorf immediately began an investigation and was soon convinced that it was Charles Pettit, his nephew. Mr. Pottorf stated that he was not satisfied tht Pettit shot himself after attempting to shoot his woman companion, a girl by the name of Maud L. Yoder, who came running from the room in a Chicago hotel with a slight bullet wound in her arm. There are circumstances that lead to the conclusion that perhaps Pettit was shot. The matter will be fully investigated by the uncle. In case that his nephew is dead, he will bring the body back here for interment. Pettit was a married man, but he and his wife had not been living together for several years. He was born and raised near Augusta, Carroll County, and left home eight years ago. At his old home, he was a popular young fellow and was neverconsidered as a man who would commit suicide, although his father recently ended his life in this city. CANTON NEWS.
