After much searching for Stephen and Abner Springer, I have come to the conclusion that John is the child of Susan Springer Martin and he was born out of wedlock. John is living with Dennis Springer, his grandfather, and Dennis' daughter, Susan Springer, in the 1880 census. Susan Springer married Samuel Martin around 1885. In the 1900 census, they have five (5) Martin children living with them ranging in age from 5 to 14. However, Susan states she is the mother of 6 children and that all 6 children are living. I believe the 6th child is John W. Springer.
