Age 81, of Germano Rd. in Kilgore, Ohio died Tuesday morning Sept. 1, 2009 after a short illness. Bernice was born March 6, 1928 in Harlem Springs, Ohio a daughter of the late Clayton and Elva Guess Riegle. She was a member of the Kilgore UnitedMethodist Church and Eastern Star Chapter #315 of Carrollton. She attended Canton Actual Business College. Before taking over as bookkeeper for her husband's business, Slates Sanitary Service and Porta-Jons, Inc., she worked in Carrollton atIsaly's, Carrollton First National Bank, and at the Virginia Theater in Carrollton.

Bernice is survived by her husband, Donald (Pete) Slates whom she married November 7, 1948; one son and daughter-in- law, Robert and Carol Slates of Dalton, Ohio; one daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Rick Locke of Carrollton; five grandsons,J.D. Lumley, Scott Lumley, Adam Lumley, Matt Slates, and Isaiah Locke; two granddaughters, Kristy Slates and Faith Locke; one great-granddaughter, Isabella Yochum; one brother, Thomas Riegle of Mechanicstown. In addition to her parents Bernice waspreceded in death by a grandson, Brian Slates, and two brothers, Dick and Earl Riegle.

Funeral Services will be held Friday September 4, 2009 at 1 p.m. in the Kilgore United Methodist Church with Rev. Kimberly D. Arbaugh and Pastor David Powell officiating. Burial will follow in the Kilgore Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home in Carrollton and from noon until service time at the church. Eastern Star Services will be held Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be madeto the Kilgore Cemetery Association at 6266 Germano Rd, S E Carrollton, Ohio.
