Wednesday afternoon, Dr. J.W. Matthews, Confederate veteran, retired physician, churchman and one of Burleson County's most reputable and highly esteemed citizens died. He had just spent a month in Waxahachie with his daughter, Mrs. Campbell hoping to improve his health. He was the son of Jacob Matthews and Mary Annie Matthews, being born in Madison County, MS on December 1, 1838. He was educated in Sharon, Madison County, MS where he graduated with second honors in 1858. A few years later, he moved to Texas and located in Washington Co. When the War between the States broke out, he enlisted in Co. K, 8th Cavalry Regiment known as TERRY's Rangers, in which he served as physician for four years. In 1875, he attended American Medical College at St. Louis, where he graduated with honors. In 1880, he moved to Caldwell to practice. He was a member of the Methodist church and married to Miss Sarah Atkinson. To them six children were born, two died in infancy and a son, Wier Matthews died several years ago. Surviving; Mesdames M.L. Womack of San Antonio, John Campbell of Waxahachie and J. Louis Giddings of Caldwell. His wife died several years ago. He was buried at Masonic Cemetery. Surviving; Mesdames M.L. Womack of San Antonio, John Campbell of Waxahachie and J. Louis Giddings of Caldwell. His wife died several years ago. He was buried at Masonic Cemetery.
