James H. Kope was the oldest of four sons born to John & Christina (Jolliff) Kope. He married Sarah E. Wise on 04 Apr 1861 in Wayne County, Ohio. Two children were born to them, Ruben Alva, born in 1861 and Katura, birthdate unknown and died as a child on 17 Sep 1866. She is buried beside her father in Maize Cemetery.
James served in the Civil War enlisting as a private, age 21, on 16 Apr 1861 in Co. E, 4th Infantry Regiment Ohio and mustered out 0n 04 Jun 1861. He enlisted again as a private, age 26, on 02 May 1864 [regiment not stated] and mustered out on 04 Sep 1864 at Camp Cleveland, OH. He is also listed as a private in Co. D of the 169th Ohio Infantry [National Guard].

Mrs. John Kope Sr., departed this life on Monday, Feb 4th, 1889, at her home in Plain Township, aged 82 years, 5 months, and 10 days. The cause was the infirmity of old age, but death was hastened by a fall received a week before, a broken rib having penetrated her lung.
The deceased was one of the early pioneers of Wayne County. Her maiden name was Christina Joliff. She was born in Berks County, Pa., and came with her parents to this State in 1817, first settling in Starke County, but in a short time removed to where she continued to reside the remainder of her days. On Feb. 4th, 1836, she was united in marriage to John Kope. Eight children was the result this union, three of whom with the husband survive her [preceded in death by three infants and to sons, James H. and Jonas] v iz. A.J. [Aaron Jacob] Kope, of Horace, Kansas; John [Sherman] Kope, Jr., of Plain township, and Mrs. Wm [Lovina] Hummer, of Wooster, and also sixteen grandchildren.

The funeral took place on Wednesday of last week at the family residence and was largely attended. The remains were laid to rest in Oak Grove graveyard.

John Kope, Sr. aged 78 years, died at his home at 11:00 o'clock on Wednesday of last week of a complication of diseases. Mr. Kope was born in Pennsylvania [The oldest son of John Henry & Anna Magdalena "Mary" Kope] but had lived in Wayne county for nearly 68 years. His wife preceded him to the grave only a few short months ago. They were the parents of five children [plus three children dying in infancy], James H., deceased, Aaron, of Greely, Kan., Jonas, deceased, John Jr. [aka John Sherman], and Lavina, the wife of Wm. Hummer, of Wooster. Mr. Kope was an ardent Republican in politics and was proud of the fact that his four sons took part in the war of the rebellion. The funeral services took place from the residence at 10 o'clock Friday morning.
