Text:
SUDDEN DEATH OF AN OLD CITIZEN On Thursady morning Mrs Catharine Clinton, while apparently in good health and without any warning, was suddenly called away from the work of the earth in the 66th year of her age. Had a thunderbolt from a cloudless sky descended in our midst, we could not have been more startled or our consternation been greater. The deceased was the oldest resident of this town, having resided here a half century. Born in 1812, in Washington Co, Pa, where she resided until 1827 or '28, when she, with her father's family took up their western march beyond the rolling waters of the "Beautiful River", into the wild and almost unbroken forests of Ohio. From that time on she has resided here. Great changes have taken place since her arrival; the green hills and valleys which now surround us were then covered with dense woods. The beautiful village which we now have was then represented by two solitary dwellings. Strangers appeared, figured a while, and then departed; yet she alone remained. The deceased had possessed, up to the morning of her death, remarkable good health. For some few years she had been troubled with something like heart disease, which at times troubled her some, but would soon pass away. Upon the morning of her death she seemed to be feeling exceedingly well, had made a call or two, was working at her week's ironing, when as if a kind Providence had sent them, two of her neighbors called to get some plants. They had not been in the house more than a couple minutes, when she exclaimed, "Oh, my head!" and started to fall. She was instantly caught in the arms of those present and gently laid upon the bed, Dr Roach arrived a minute later, but too late; already had life become extinct, and the weary spirit had taken its flight "to that undiscovered land from whose bourne no traveler has yet returned." Mother Clinton was a consistent and worthy Christian, having united herself to the Disciple church twenty-two years ago. She had her faults and shortcomings as is the lot of all mortals; but she had her virtues. None were more ready to assist the distressed; always first at the bed-side of the sick, where she carried those little dainties which she knew so well how to select, to please the taste or the sight. Always kind and gentle to those she loved, the whole community seemed greatly attached to her. And while we have placed her frailities with her body in the cold and silent charnel house of the dead, her ennobling virtues should ever dwell greenly in our memories. Peace to her ashes.
