PUBLISHED IN THE FREE PRESS STANDARD, CARROLLTON, OHIO, PAGE B-2 90 AND OVER... P. J. MANFULL MARKS 100TH BIRTHDAY Paul Jehue Manfull of Augusta celebrated 100 years of a good life June 27. A special surprise birthday party was held Sunday in his honor at his granddaughter's, Mrs. John Scherr (JoAnn), home in Augusta. Born in 1892 to George and Emma (Pottorf) Manfull, he still resides on the same farm where he was born. He had two brothers, Otto and Royal and a sister, Nova Nixon, who are deceased. On Dec. 24, 1914, Manfull married Susan Patterson. "P. J." as he is called, recalls cutting eight-inch-thick ice on the farm pond until noon on Christmas Eve and then hitching up the horse and buggy to go and pickup his future bride. They then drove to Carrollton and were married in the Christian Church Parsonage. They had a son, Clair "Bud," who owns and operates C. L. Manfull in Augusta. In addition to Mrs. Scherr he has another granddaughter and four great-grandchildren. the ice that he cut, was packed in straw and stored in the ice house until summer months. This was just one area that added to the farm income. P. J. was one of the leading progressive farmers of Carroll County, having raised several acres of potatoes and strawberries, plus milking cows. The first apple trees were planted in 1924 and to this day, there is one tree still living that was said to be planted by Johnny Appleseed. When the old pipe-line went through Augusta Township, P. J. and his wife roomed and boarded the pipe-line men. He used his team to haul pipe for the line and made $7 a day. "That was good wages in those times," he added. Always an avid sports enthusiast, whether baseball, basketball or football, he sometimes let play come before work. He and his son would stop working to go play baseball, and then shock wheat by moonlight catch up on the farm work. Today, when a game is on television, don't interrupt -- he'll talk to you later! His first wife died April 3, 1960, after 46 years of marriage. In October of 1962, he married Eunice Kapps of Lakewales, Fla. He and his first wife spent the winter months in Florida for nearly 20 years. Then when he married Kapps, he resided in Florida year round. In Florida, his avid sportmanship earned him many trophies. These included shuffleboard and bench-rest target shooting. He spent his evenings at the Tourist Club playing cards. After the death of his second wife, he moved back to Ohio to permanently settle in the house his father and mother built. He still lives alone, does his own cooking and likes to mow his lawn. He still enjoys playing cards and goes to the Minerva Senior Center to play. P. J.'s reply to what he attributes his long life to was, "Hard work and eating eggs and Coke. I've eaten eggs every day for 90 years," he commented. |
